Smart Junctions 5G End of Project Showcase

Smart Junctions 5G End of Project Showcase

On 26th July, the Smart Junctions 5G Project celebrated with an End of Project Showcase in Manchester, featuring our C365-5G-Mini Router.

The Smart Junctions 5G project began in September 2020 and is a collaboration between VivaCity and Web3 startup Weaver Labs, in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Smart Junctions 5G uses a private 5G network to enhance VivaCity’s Smart Junctions Project – an AI-based traffic signal optimisation system. This is currently deployed in Manchester, and has already shown to cut waiting times at traffic signals significantly.

Watch this video from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, as their Minister for Media, Data and Digital Infrastructure Matt Warman visited the Smart Junctions Showcase. Look out for our 5G-Mini router!

Comparing 4G to 5G, there was a 5% improvement of acceptable latency, which translated to a 1% improvement in journey time over an average day. With further OpenRan developments to increase the network’s stability, this figure will improve. If 16 million journeys are made through this junction across a year, and the average journey time through the junction is 100 seconds, then this 1% improvement translates to 185 days saved time across all of the vehicles passing through.
